Psalms 116:12

A framework for generous living

What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?

Psalms 116:12

Want to know what you have to offer? Take inventory of what you’ve been given.

When the psalmist uses the word “goodness,” it’s indicative of having received a bounty from the Lord. Here are 5 areas to survey God’s supply, and offer to others from that abundance:

Our time

If time is thought of as a possession we own, we tend to hurry to and from our activities. But when “our time” is placed upon the canvas of eternity, we become attentive and present to the expression of God - no matter the moment we’re in.

Our talent

Everything changes when we shift whose glory we’re after. Talent is no longer for individual aims, but God’s provision for love’s expression. Our abilities become enjoyable gifts to offer, rather than competitive weapons to wield.

Our treasure

Our resources are a useful, helpful measuring stick of our perception of God’s goodness to us. While we’re tempted to accumulate and measure the material, God invites us to see it in terms of remembrance and overflow of His goodness.

Our thought

We live in a world that works us into suspicion of others. Recall God’s generous thought toward us: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Let us abandon suspicion and look instead for the activity of our Savior in and through one another.

Our touch

How gently and humbly Jesus came to us! He bore our burdens, and offered us the easy yoke and light burden. If our own price was paid, we no longer need to exact a price from others.
