Exodus 20:10

The echo chamber sabbath-keeping unlocks

but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

Exodus 20:10

George MacDonald once said, “Sleep is God’s contrivance for giving us the help he cannot get into us when we are awake.”

It’s good for us to get outside of the echo chamber of our own importance. It’s a holding cell that mires us in thinking we’re the source of ours and others’ lives. We can begin to believe everyone awakens each day attentive to our activity.

The great big secret?

People are far too caught up in thinking about themselves to be thinking about us. Sabbath stops the cycle of beginning with human effort and instead begins with God’s grace. It reminds us that when we stop, the stuff of God keeps going.

And that is some really, really good news.
