Exodus 13:21-22

The pillars of God's presence in front of us

By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

Exodus 13:21-22

What life must’ve been like to have these pillars of God’s presence!

  • Guidance: A new way for people who’d only ever known the Egyptian way.

  • Light: To have sight even when their surroundings were darkness.

  • Shade: To be refreshed in all activities.

  • Shield: Having the assurance of protection from the clutches of the old way of life as they set out in new ways.

  • Wisdom: Provided with insight as to how to navigate and live in their new freedom.

It would be a mistake to think these rewards were correlated with the forms of cloud and fire.

These rewards are still readily available, albeit in new forms. Jesus left us two pillars to be his presence in this day: the Word of God, and the Spirit of God. Different forms, same roles.

Often overlooked, but no less visible.
