Exodus 13:19

The Most Valuable Thing You’ll Leave Others

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”

Exodus 13:19

Of all the possible treasures you can leave your loved ones when this life is over, the most valuable is a life that says: “God will surely come to your aid.”

It’s the message Joseph left the Israelites long after his life was over. As they were delivered from Egypt, wandered the desert, and wondered what was next, they had the very bones of one who’d been aided by God. And who better than Joseph?

  • He’d seen God’s promise in his dreams as a teenager.

  • He’d experienced God’s providence in being sold into work.

  • He’d had God’s presence in prison (Genesis 39 says it 4 times).

  • He’d been favored by God’s positioning as he rose to 2nd in command in Egypt.

  • And he’d seen God’s promise fulfilled as he reunited with his family and his dreams came to fruition 22 years after he dreamed them.

No wonder he looked back at the end of his life and saw God’s goodness all over it.

Like Joseph, may our very bones be less about us and more about the good news of salvation to those who come after us.

Heavenly Father - So saturate our lives with the saving heart of Jesus that the legacy we leave others would be one that says “God has come to your aid.” Amen.
