1 Peter 5:10

What maturing looks like

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

1 Peter 5:10

Four words should strike us here: restore, strong, firm, steadfast.

Is this really the same Peter we saw in the Gospel accounts?

His entire vocabulary has been overhauled. And as Jesus taught us, from the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. Implication? Peter is a new man, having had a heart transformation.

Once excitable and impulsive, Peter chased life’s highs and avoided its lows, without regard for anyone else.

But now a more mature Peter understands that God’s power is most pronounced in bringing life into the darkness of a suffering world. Peter’s salvation (and ours) isn’t only reserved for someday in eternity. Abundant life has a steadying effect now in the everyday.

Jesus knew exactly what he was doing - and going to do - in naming Peter “rock.”

Perhaps the exalting of 1 Peter 5:6 is detailed here in verse 10 - less about our individual attainment of life’s high places, and more about God steadying us to accompany those in the low places.
